Get To Know Me!
Hey there, my name is Sidney Hoyt! I’m originally from the Northwest Arkansas area, where my love of dance began. I initially was enrolled in dance classes for the fun & friends, but I later learned that it was a passion I wanted to pursue. I auditioned for (and joined) The Dance Force’s pre-professional competition team, under the direction of Saylor Bailey, and that is when my love for dance truly started to become a career. Through being a competitive dancer, I was able to experience many wonderful opportunities. Namely, being a part of the prestigious Tremaine Performance Company! I obtained so many lifelong skills with my time on these companies, like strong work-ethic, dedication, and leadership.
I am now currently attending school at Oklahoma City University in the Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Entertainment, pursuing a Bachelors of Science in American Dance Pedagogy. Teaching dance has always been a huge passion of mine, and coming to OCU furthered that love. Through the Ann Lacy school, I have also been a part of the Star Dance Company, where I have been given the opportunity to be a line captain multiple times for a couple different choreographers.
Dancer & Educator first… Baker second?
When I’m not dancing, I’m often found working at Sandi Sue’s Gluten Free Bakery in Bentonville Arkansas. As someone who has grown up with celiac disease and a love for baking, this was the perfect job for me! My true talents in this job have shown through my ability to decorate baked goods, mainly sugar cookies. I can spend hours at a time just decorating away! Take a look at some of my sweet creations below!
Alpha Chi Omega!
One of the most unexpected and biggest parts of my college life has been my sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. I joined Alpha Chi Omega (Gamma Tau chapter) during my freshman year in formal recruitment, and I was very hesitant about the whole Greek life thing. However, I could not have been more wrong!
The leadership opportunities that I’ve been given through Alpha Chi Omega have given my so many different skills that I am able to apply to other aspects of my life. Being the Vice President of Recruitment Information has taught me to multi-task and work well under pressure, all while being an approachable person to talk to when problems arose. I currently hold the position of the Vice President of Recruitment, and I’m looking forward to all the lessons I have yet to learn!
Beyond the leadership, Alpha Chi Omega has given me lifelong friends, and for that, I couldn’t be more grateful!
Star Dance Company / The Ann Lacy School of American Dance & Entertainment
Throughout my time at Oklahoma City University, as previously mentioned, I have had the opportunity to be a part of the Star Dance Company through the Ann Lacy School of American Dance & Entertainment. I have performed in the Star Dance Company’s winter dance show, “The Holiday Spectacular” since I was a freshman in 2022, and same for their spring dance show, “MOVE! Dance for the World of Entertainment” since 2023. Having these performance opportunities and the chance to work with different choreographers throughout the school has been such a rewarding experience! From being a swing to being a line captain, I have learned so much. Some other performance opportunities I’ve had at OCU include: the Student Choreography Show (2023, 2024), “Hansel & Gretel” (2022), and Project 21 (2023)— which I also participated in the following year as a choreographer! Below are a few ‘behind the scenes’ looks at some of those performances.
My Teaching Journey!
Teaching is honestly not something I ever anticipated falling in love with, and yet, here I am as a Dance Pedagogy major! I began teaching a couple of classes during my senior year of high school, way before I found a passion in teaching. I didn’t realize how much happiness teaching gave me until the summer before my sophomore year of college, the year that at OCU, dance majors declare their track of performance, management, or pedagogy. I thought I was going to go with performance throughout my whole freshman year, until I understood the feeling of working with a dancer for a while and seeing their excitement when they could see the improvement I saw too. It was then that I realized that pedagogy would be the track for me, and I was definitely correct!
I have the opportunity to teach at my home studio, The Dance Force, anytime I am home. My favorite is always over the summer, when I can really see improvement from my students over the course of a few months. I’m lucky enough to have so many supportive families that continue working with me year after year!
